Gordon's Thanksgiving List 2014

Thankful for:

  • After the exciting moments with a truck and a bike in June; being here

Mary Beth's List 2014

Once again, I am grateful to be included in this tradition.

I always find it difficult to remember back to the beginning of the year now that we are near the end; I get so wrapped up in what’s currently happening that January, February feel like a lifetime ago.  If I kept a better (or any) journal this might be easier. But here goes.

Much gratitude this year for:

*Perspective. Especially from social media. Realizing I have many people in my life I really like but who see the world through a completely different lens.

*10 years of marriage.

*My children’s teachers. They bring out the best in these two boys and keep them excited to head out to school every day.

*A great marathon experience. Running 26.2 miles with complete confidence, and still loving running after it was over.

*A 20th high school reunion that was actually fun. And for being 20 years away from high school.

*Anderson’s salted caramel pecan pie ice cream, on top of Anderson’s pumpkin cheesecake ice cream. Also Chocolove chocolate bars.

*A well-stocked pantry and refrigerator, and the ability to re-stock whenever we need or want more. Again, perspective.

*Courage; my own and others’.

*Our city, full of top-notch restaurants, friendly people and local-owned shops. Everyone else might be “discovering” Buffalo now, but it is wonderful to have always known how great it is, and will be.

Books: An Everlasting Meal, Tamar Adler; Someone Could Get Hurt: A Memoir of Twentieth-Century Parenting, Drew Magary; The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Brian Selznick; The Interestings, Meg Wolitzer

Movies: “Big Hero 6,” “How to Train Your Dragon 2.” (To be fair, these were some of the only movies I’ve seen.)

“Serial” podcast is one of the most interesting things I’ve come across in a long time. Love it.

Meals: Vermilion in Alexandria, VA; The Black Sheep in Buffalo on Connecticut St.

I’m sure after I click “publish” I’ll think of a thousand more things, but for now, happy thanksgiving. See you same time next year.

Laila's 2014 List

This year I am thankful for many things, including:

Elections. Even if the candidates all stink, I’m glad that we have them.

My job, which has its downsides but allows me a lot of flexibility.

Lake houses, silly nieces, delicious guacamole, good bourbon, deep lawns, guitars and paddleboats.

Coming to terms with the ebb and flow of relationships. I’m excited to discover new facets of old friendships and accept moving on from others.

Closing chapters, in this case, taking my last class ever! Or so I hope.  Anyway, done with coursework for my master of public health.

Learning that I have more in common than I knew with my family in the wake of my grandmother’s death.

Mother-daughter trips.

Friend trips.

Cheese palaces and reunion tours.

As always: the library, cashmere, clean sheets, my cuddly pup.

Best meal:  Anniversary dinner with Ben at Restaurant Revolution.

Best Book:  Not new but I read it this year.  Remains of the Day.

Best movie: I’ve only seen about 3 movies this year but I enjoyed the feel-good Chef.

Best exhibit:  ExhibitBe, part of Prospect 3

Best live music: Raul Midon at Dillard University and Christian Scott at the Civic Theater.

Madison's Thanksgiving List 2014

  • Having a wedding in New Orleans, and being able to visit multiple times this year to “plan”
  • North Carolina for giving my dad a great start to a new chapter in his life
  • Eastern Illinois University for giving my brother the opportunity to grow academically and socially.
  • Having had the perfect bridal shower thrown for me by some of the loveliest ladies I know
  • Being able to buy ridiculous outfits to embarrass my new niece
  • Gluten free pretzels. They’re actually better than the gluten-filled ones.
  • Clam dip
  • Half Shell’s insanely cheap crab legs
  • Finally finding a doggie sweater that will fit Charlie and keep him warm through ChiBeria: Part Deux
  • Being able to see the Bills beat the Bears with my dad, brother and Tommy at a Buffalo bar in Chicago while wearing a Bills jersey. And the gloating. Lots and lots of gloating.
  • Friendly’s for having a menu full of sexual innuendo
  • On that note, Urban Dictionary for their detailed definitions.
  • Hank Azaria praising my Simpsons article on Twitter
  • My consistently full schedule of concerts to see
  • Netflix
  • Carpeted dive bars, for giving my friends and me a place to hang out
  • And since I am my father’s daughter, I will also break the rules: I am insanely grateful to have a family that is loving, supportive, funny, good-looking and an all-around good time. 🙂

Love to you all!!

Sadly I haven’t had time to get into any new books/tv shows, but I have been listening to the “Serial” podcast. Strongly recommend checking it out.
